On June 14, an explosive-laden drone crash-landed on a beach in Bartin province, prompting an evacuation and a controlled detonation by ordnance disposal teams. Following this, two UAVs came down on June 23-24, one of which was a fixed-wing drone that crashed into a hazelnut orchard in Kastamonu province, causing a fire and scattering debris. Local residents reported experiencing panic during these events, highlighting the potential danger posed by these drones.
The most recent incident occurred in Trabzon province, where a Ukrainian attack drone carrying 5 kg of explosives crashed into a tree on a rural area of the Black Sea coast. This drone was identified as being of Ukrainian origin, and investigators confirmed that it came down approximately 100 km from the Georgian border. Fortunately, no casualties or major damage were reported, although local residents experienced brief panic before authorities secured the site. The drone crash in Trabzon is part of a troubling trend, as at least four UAVs have crashed in the area over the past month, all occurring hundreds of kilometers from the ongoing combat zone.
Turkish officials have not publicly commented on these incidents, but in late March, they indicated that they were closely monitoring the risks posed by drones in the Black Sea region. They emphasized the importance of maintaining contact with relevant parties to prevent the war from escalating into the Black Sea area. Meanwhile, Ukraine has ramped up its long-range drone strikes against Russia, targeting critical infrastructure and oil terminals. However, many of these drones have deviated from their intended paths and crash-landed in NATO countries, raising concerns about civilian safety and international relations.
Despite the incidents, Ukraine has not indicated any plans to scale back its drone campaign, and it has apologized for the unintended consequences of its operations. Most affected governments have refrained from formally condemning Ukraine, instead attributing the drone incidents to Russian electronic warfare.
