Story
In the United States, Volkswagen Group of America Inc. initiated a substantial recall affecting over 44,000 electric SUVs known as the ID.4. This action was prompted by concerns regarding the high-voltage battery overheating, which could potentially lead to vehicle fires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall, which encompasses 43,881 vehicles from the model years 2023 to 2025. Furthermore, an additional 670 vehicles from the 2023 to 2024 model years are also included in this recall due to issues with misaligned electrodes within the high-voltage battery cell modules. The NHTSA has issued strong recommendations to the owners of these vehicles, advising them to park outdoors immediately after charging to mitigate safety risks. Owners are also cautioned against charging their vehicles indoors overnight until the necessary repairs are made. Additionally, the use of Level 3 DC charging stations is discouraged, and the maximum battery charge should be limited to 80% until the battery remedy is complete. The recall announcement noted that the 43,881 vehicles would receive software updates for the high-voltage battery. Replacement of the high-voltage battery will also occur as needed at no cost to the vehicle owners. Similarly, for the 670 affected vehicles, Volkswagen will replace the high-voltage battery cell modules if necessary to ensure safety compliance. Notification letters regarding this recall are set to be mailed out to the affected vehicle owners starting in March. In the meantime, concerned owners can reach out to Volkswagen customer service for any inquiries or additional information regarding the recall process.
