The Algerian boxing federation has recently joined the World Boxing group, which aims to secure boxing's status in the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This decision comes amid ongoing uncertainty regarding the sport's Olympic future, particularly following the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to ban the International Boxing Association (IBA) due to governance issues. The IOC has set a deadline for establishing a credible governing body for boxing, which has prompted various national federations to seek affiliation with World Boxing. Imane Khelif, an Olympic champion from Algeria, is among the athletes affected by the turmoil surrounding boxing's governance. She, along with Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, faced disqualification from the 2023 women’s world championships over controversial eligibility claims. Despite these challenges, both athletes have qualified for the Olympics and received support from the IOC, highlighting the ongoing disputes within the sport. The addition of Algeria and Japan to World Boxing increases its membership to 44 federations, indicating a growing movement towards reform in the sport. World Boxing president Boris van der Vorst emphasized the importance of this expansion as a sign of the widespread desire for change within boxing, which is crucial for maintaining its Olympic status.
