A report by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) highlights that this violence is often perpetrated by armed men, and has many victims falling into cycles of brutality and humiliation. The situation worsened last year as fighting intensified in certain regions, leading to an influx of reports documenting severe abuse against women and girls. Survivors have reported being assaulted while engaging in daily tasks such as collecting firewood, fetching water, and traveling to farms, emphasizing the alarming frequency of these incidents. The report identifies the city of el-Fasher and the displaced persons camps of Zamzam and Abu Shouk as significant locations of these atrocities. With over 90% of victims assaulted while seeking safety in Tawila, the data indicates that these criminal acts are systematic and heavily linked to the ethnic conflicts in the region. Specifically, non-Arab communities, such as the Zaghawa, Massalit, and Fur, have been targeted, rooted in the longstanding ethnic tensions in Darfur that have fueled violence for decades.
