A recent analysis by the Met Office reveals that the climate crisis is leading to a significant increase in extreme high temperatures across the UK. The report, which examines temperature, rainfall, and seasonal changes from 2014 to 2023, indicates that many regions, particularly in southeast England and Wales, have experienced an alarming rise in the number of days exceeding 30°C. Notably, the last decade has seen a tripling of such "very hot" days compared to the period from 1961 to 1990. The report also documents a rise in extreme weather events, including the warmest June on record and a prolonged heatwave in September 2023. Storm Babet, which struck in October, caused severe flooding and multiple fatalities, underscoring the growing impact of climate change on daily life. Additionally, the UK has experienced a 40% increase in "pleasant" days, defined as those with temperatures of 20°C or more, and a 20% rise in the frequency of the wettest days. Lead author Mike Kendon emphasized the stark changes in weather patterns, noting a "complete collapse" in record-breaking cold months. The report confirms that 2023 was the UK's second warmest year on record, with six of the top ten warmest years occurring within the last decade. The findings highlight the urgent need for action as climate change continues to exacerbate extreme weather conditions across the country.
