This journey began on October 26, 2023, in Fort Worth, Texas, and includes planned visits through several states before culminating in Washington, D.C. As they traveled, the monks camped overnight near Dayton, Texas, where they encountered a severe incident on U.S. Highway 90. While walking along the highway, their escort vehicle was struck by a truck, which forced it into two monks around 6:13 p.m. on a Wednesday, creating a critical situation. One of the monks experienced substantial leg injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Houston for urgent medical attention, where he is expected to undergo multiple surgeries to address his broken bone. The other monk, who sustained less severe injuries, was transported by ambulance to a different hospital in the Houston area, where his condition has not been publicly disclosed yet. In a public statement following the accident, both monks were noted to be in good spirits, and the more seriously injured monk was reported to be giving thumbs-up gestures despite the severity of his injuries. They had already visited various cities including Austin and Houston before this incident, continuing their mission with law enforcement escorts and support. The group is determined to resume their peace walk without altering their plans in the wake of the crash. Their spokesperson Long Si Dong assured followers that they would continue working cooperatively with local authorities to maintain safety protocols during the journey. Meanwhile, the investigation into the truck driver's actions is ongoing, with initial reports suggesting driver inattention as a possible contributing factor in the crash.
