Story

On March 25, 2026, Denver Summit FC and the Washington Spirit faced off in a remarkable match at Empower Field in Denver, Colorado. The event garnered an unprecedented crowd of 63,004 fans, breaking the previous NWSL attendance record, which stood at 40,091 during a Bay FC match the previous year. The Summit, an expansion team joining the league in 2026, demonstrated its ambitions right from the start by hosting the match at a venue typically reserved for the NFL's Denver Broncos. Prior to this remarkable event, the Summit organization strategically positioned itself within a passionate sports city. Since its announcement in November 2025, Denver Summit FC has attracted significant interest, quickly surpassing 15,000 season-ticket deposits. This rapid growth in fan engagement highlights the demand for women's professional soccer in the region, as the city had previously lacked a dedicated professional women’s team. In addition to setting an attendance record, the Denver Summit FC is actively working on constructing its own 14,500-seat stadium, which will be located a few miles south of Empower Field. The team plans to play most of its home games this season and the next at a temporary 12,000-seat modular stadium in Centennial, focusing on enhancing the fan experience and establishing a permanent home by 2028. The enthusiasm surrounding the team suggests a promising future for women’s soccer in Denver. Also, in Arizona, entrepreneur Vicki Mayo is making strides toward bringing an NWSL team to the Phoenix metropolitan area. Mayo is leading the development of the Palo District project in Mesa, which includes a 25,000-seat stadium designed specifically for women players and fans. Alongside the stadium, the project will introduce a Women’s Health Campus and a hotel, reflecting the project's commitment to celebrating women's contributions to sports. With a combination of private financing and innovative tax increment financing models, the project hopes to open in early 2028. This venture aims to capture the growing demand for women's professional sports and enhance the local community's involvement, mirroring the success experienced by Denver Summit FC.
