In December 2025, the Food and Drug Administration granted approval for a new oral version of Wegovy, a weight loss drug developed by Novo Nordisk. This marks a significant advancement in the field as it represents the first oral GLP-1 medication approved specifically for weight loss purposes. Prior to this approval, Novo Nordisk had only marketed a pill version of semaglutide, known as Rybelsus, for diabetes management. This new medication is designed to be taken daily and is intended to be more psychologically acceptable for patients compared to injectable forms of the drug. Clinical trials have already shown promising results for the Wegovy pill. Participants in a Phase 3 trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine exhibited an average weight loss of 16.6% over a 64-week period when taking the highest dose of the pill, significantly outpacing the 2.2% weight loss observed in the placebo group. This effectiveness is comparable to that of the injectable Wegovy, which demonstrated a weight reduction of approximately 15% after 68 weeks in previous trials. However, adherence to the prescribed daily regimen is crucial, as those who deviated from the schedule during the trial experienced reduced weight loss results. Despite these positive outcomes, several uncertainties persist regarding the real-world effectiveness of the Wegovy pill. Medical professionals like Dr. Christopher McGowan from North Carolina’s weight loss clinic emphasize the importance of patient adherence to obtain meaningful results. The Wegovy pill must be consumed first thing in the morning and on an empty stomach, and patients are encouraged to stick to their routines to avoid lower efficacy. Additionally, while the pill version appears effective, doctors caution that oral versions of GLP-1 drugs generally lead to less weight loss than their injectable counterparts based on past observations. Concerns also linger regarding the pricing and insurance coverage for the new medication.
