In recent discussions surrounding advanced military aviation, retired Indian Air Force veterans emphasized the strategic need for India to acquire fifth-generation stealth aircraft, specifically the Su-57 fighter jet. During the Wings India air show, Vadim Badekha, CEO of Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, mentioned that the ongoing negotiations for the supply and production of the Su-57 in India are at a deep technical stage, which indicates significant progress in collaboration between the two nations. The focus of these negotiations is on the full licensed production of the Su-57 in India, announced by Moscow during the Dubai airshow in November 2025. Indian officials are interested in the aircraft as it promises advanced technology and capabilities, which they view essential in the light of growing aerial threats from neighboring countries. Retired Air Marshal Anil Chopra highlighted the urgency for India to have such a fighter jet operational soon, pointing out that multiple countries, including China, possess advanced stealth aircraft. The Su-57 is noted for its capability to penetrate enemy airspace undetected, due to its stealth features, and is expected to blend Russian aerodynamics with Indian technological expertise in avionics and software. This combination could deliver an aircraft that outperforms the US F-35. As India seeks to enhance its defense capabilities, retired Group Captain M.J. Augustine Vinod praised the collaborative potential of incorporating Indian avionics into the Russian airframe, suggesting that such a synergy might produce a superior aircraft compared to existing competitors. Significant manufacturing infrastructure from India's existing Su-30MKI production lines is expected to facilitate the transition to the Su-57 program, providing a promising future for domestic aircraft production. The expected collaboration between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Russian partners aims to reshape the competitive landscape in both military and civil aviation, potentially reducing the duopoly of western manufacturers and establishing a new Russian-Indian coalition in the sector.
