Taiwan is currently hosting the International Association of Societies of Design Research (IASDR) conference at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei City, which began on December 2 and runs until December 5, 2025. The event highlights Taiwan's significant role in the global design landscape and has attracted over 800 designers, industry leaders, and officials from 47 different countries. The conference, themed 'Design Next,' focuses on future trends in design through various human-centered and digital approaches, addressing critical global issues such as artificial intelligence collaboration, emerging technologies, social change, and environmental sustainability. Among the prominent events at the conference are specialized forums organized by leading academics and industry professionals. For instance, the Humanity Forum titled 'Left by Our Own Devices' was led by renowned scholars Johan Redström from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and Laura Forlano from Northeastern University in the United States. Additionally, the Public/Industry Forum discussed 'Achieving Design Impact at National Level' and was presented by Chang Chi-yi, the President of the Taiwan Design Research Institute. Another significant contribution came from Stephan Wensveen of Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, addressing the 'Aesthetics of Intelligence' at the Technology Forum. These forums underscore the importance of collaboration between academia and industry in shaping the future of design. The conference received substantial academic engagement, with 1,120 research submissions from around the world, from which 557 were selected to compete for the best paper award. This level of participation reflects the high level of interest and investment in design research and innovation on an international scale. The Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI) has organized additional satellite events that provide a deeper insight into local design practices and innovations, allowing attendees to explore Taiwan's unique contributions to the design world. On December 5, the Design Industry Forum will convene, inviting enterprises from Asia, America, and Europe to discuss various topics including future mobility design, intelligent green practices, and the co-creation of sustainable cities. Furthermore, the industry tour aims to illustrate how design influences Taiwan's industries, cities, and everyday life. Meanwhile, an exhibition at the Taiwan Design Museum in Taipei, running until January 25, 2026, showcases the diverse roles of design in driving both industrial innovation and societal transformation. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Economic Minister Ho Chin-tsang emphasized that design is a crucial element for Taiwan's industrial upgrades, improvement of public spaces, and fostering social innovation, and expressed anticipation for enhanced international exchanges and cooperation as a result of this conference.
