On Friday morning, four local officials in Russia's Kursk Region were injured when their vehicle was struck by a remotely detonated explosive device. The incident occurred in central Rylsk, a town located approximately 25 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The vehicle, which belonged to the district administration, was targeted while passing through the area. Among the injured was Vladimir Kovalchuk, the head of the Rylsk District, who suffered blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to his legs. The driver, Sergey Besedin, sustained a non-penetrating abdominal wound along with shrapnel injuries to his thigh. Additionally, two other administration employees who were standing nearby were also injured by the blast and shrapnel, requiring hospitalization for acoustic trauma and wounds to their arms and legs.
In response to the attack, Russia's Investigative Committee has initiated a terrorism case, asserting that the explosive device was planted remotely by Ukrainian forces utilizing drones. Following the explosion, the area was cordoned off, and sappers were deployed to the scene to ensure safety. Local residents have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid suspicious objects, and report any concerns to emergency services. This incident is part of a troubling trend, as Rylsk has experienced a series of similar attacks recently. Just days prior, Ukrainian drones were reported to have scattered explosive devices across two city squares, resulting in the death of a bomb technician and injuries to a police officer.
Governor Aleksandr Khinshtein described the situation in Rylsk as tense, urging residents to limit unnecessary travel and to stay away from roadsides and unfamiliar objects. The rise in drone-dropped mines has also been noted in other regions of Russia, including Donbass and Novorossiya, where several civilian vehicles have been destroyed in recent weeks, leading to multiple fatalities. President Vladimir Putin has condemned these attacks, claiming they are intended to intimidate the Russian population and undermine public confidence, while asserting that such actions will not alter the battlefield dynamics or deter Russian forces from their objectives.
