In a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, a prisoner of war exchange took place, with each side returning 160 servicemen. This exchange was facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, which has acted as a mediator in various humanitarian efforts between the two nations. The Russian Defense Ministry announced the successful swap, stating that the 160 Russian servicemen were returned from areas controlled by the Ukrainian government. Following their release, these servicemen were transported to Belarus, where they are currently receiving psychological and medical assistance. Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova is actively involved in supporting the freed soldiers, who will eventually be moved to Russia for further treatment and rehabilitation. This exchange is part of a series of recent POW swaps between the two countries, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian efforts despite the conflict. Just weeks prior, on June 5, another exchange occurred, with both sides returning 185 servicemen each. Earlier, on May 15, a larger exchange of 205 POWs each was conducted, which was described as the first phase of a broader 1,000-for-1,000 exchange plan. This plan was initiated following discussions mediated by the United States around Russia's Victory Day commemorations. The continued exchanges of prisoners and the bodies of fallen soldiers demonstrate a persistent commitment to humanitarian efforts amidst the ongoing hostilities, with the UAE playing a crucial role in facilitating these negotiations.
