In a strategic move to enhance user experience, Meta has launched a new standalone app named Seller, specifically designed for managing listings on Facebook Marketplace. This app was announced on a Friday and is now available for download on both iOS and Android platforms. While users can still sell items through the main Facebook app, the Seller app offers improved features for managing listings and interacting with potential buyers. Users can log in with their Facebook accounts to access their Marketplace history, view activity overviews, and receive reminders for tasks related to sales. Additionally, the app includes a dedicated data insights tab, which is particularly beneficial for individuals looking to turn their reselling activities into a legitimate business. This development is part of a broader trend where Meta is experimenting with separating its popular features into distinct applications. Alongside the Seller app, Meta is also testing a Groups-only app called Forum and revamping the Facebook Creator Studio. Tom Alison, head of Facebook, emphasized the company's belief in leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline processes and empower users. The introduction of verification check marks on Facebook aims to enhance safety for users engaging in buying and selling activities. Users can obtain a verification mark by uploading a selfie, which indicates that a real person is behind the account. However, it is important for users to remain vigilant, as scams can occur regardless of whether the perpetrator is a real person or a bot. The decision to create separate apps for Marketplace and Groups may be a strategic effort by Meta to retain users who might otherwise leave the platform if these features were removed. Furthermore, the company is exploring new formats for its apps, including a video-centric approach similar to TikTok, which is expected to roll out in the United States next year.
