Story
In South Carolina, Dog Squad, a small nonprofit dog rescue, began conducting DNA tests on their foster dogs with the intent of understanding their backgrounds and health. Surprisingly, the results revealed a troubling pattern: several Great Pyrenees had genetic links to one another despite being rescued at different times and from different places. The first notable result came on January 1 when a rescued dog named Atticus was found to be a half-brother to another dog named Bernie. This alarming discovery prompted additional tests, which indicated that further foster dogs like Cracker, Andi, Yeti, and Ronin were similarly related, illustrating a significant phenomenon among the breed. The increase in Great Pyrenees rescues correlates with a rise in homesteading activities following 2020, as many individuals began purchasing livestock guardian dogs without adequate knowledge of their needs. This situation has led to numerous Great Pyrenees being surrendered to shelters, including Sahli and Doug, who were abandoned at 12 weeks old after their owner sought euthanasia following a tragic incident involving their parents. Sahli stresses the importance of understanding that Great Pyrenees are not merely pets but are bred for particular roles that require training and management. Concerned about the implications of careless breeding practices, Dog Squad plans to conduct DNA tests on additional foster Great Pyrenees. Sahli emphasizes the necessity of community awareness regarding the struggles faced by these dogs and the responsibilities that come with owning them. Many perceived the dogs as suitable for farms, oblivious to their need for proper care and conditions which have not only led to higher shelter rates for the breed but also to heartbreaking situations such as the one faced by the two brothers. In light of these findings, Dog Squad aims to foster more dialogues around the breeding and care of Great Pyrenees while continuing their mission to support dogs in dire situations. They hope to bring attention to this troubling trend that affects not only the dogs but also communities that are left grappling with the consequences of insufficient education on livestock guardian dogs and their specific requirements.
