Japan has announced plans to deploy surface-to-air missiles on Yonaguni island, situated 110 kilometers east of Taiwan, by March 2031. This strategic move was revealed by the Japanese defence ministry as part of a broader effort to enhance national security amid rising tensions with China. The deployment timeline, which marks a significant step in Japan's military posture, was first indicated in 2022 but is now being specified more concretely. The island already serves as a military base, and ongoing preparations will include the establishment of new facilities to accommodate the missile units.
