Story

A recent global study revealed that in discussion about gender roles within marriage, a significant portion of Gen Z men exhibit traditional views that echo societal norms of past generations, particularly regarding obedience within the marital relationship. The research, conducted by Ipsos and the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at King's College London, involved interviews with approximately 23,000 individuals across 29 countries and was published in the lead-up to International Women’s Day. The survey indicated that 31 percent of Generation Z men, defined as those born between 1997 and 2012, believe that a wife should always obey her husband, a sentiment that is markedly higher than the 13 percent of Baby Boomer men who hold the same view. Furthermore, the study found that 33 percent of Gen Z males think their husbands should have the final say on significant household decisions. Conversely, only 17 percent of Baby Boomers felt a husband ought to have the last word on such matters, highlighting a stark generational divide in attitudes toward gender equality and marital dynamics. In addition to the worrying opinions among men, the findings also revealed that younger women are displaying a similar inclination towards traditional gender roles. Approximately 18 percent of Gen Z women believe they should always obey their husbands, a rate that is significantly higher than the 6 percent of Baby Boomer women who agree with that notion. Moreover, nearly 19 percent of Gen Z women said that men should have the final say on decisions, compared to only 6 percent of their older counterparts. Julia Gillard, Australia's only female prime minister and current chair of the Global Institute for Women's Leadership (GIWL), expressed her concern regarding these findings, stating that it is troubling to see a stagnation or regression in attitudes towards gender equality among younger generations, particularly among young men. She emphasized that these restrictive views not only place undue expectations on women but also confine men within traditional norms that may hinder their personal growth and development. The poll also unearthed significant attitudes regarding societal norms and expectations among Gen Z. For instance, more than 40 percent of Gen Z men felt pressured to be physically tough, showcasing expectations for masculinity that were less prevalent among Baby Boomers. Additionally, three in ten Gen Z men thought they should not express love towards their friends openly, and 32 percent believed they should solve problems independently rather than seeking help, which further illuminates the restrictive frameworks they often feel compelled to conform to. In contrast, only 59 percent of Gen Z men thought they were expected to contribute to gender equality, indicating a less enthusiastic acceptance of responsibility toward fostering change. As the global conversation about gender equality continues, it is crucial that both men and women are included in the dialogue to promote a balanced understanding that benefits all. The polling underlines the challenges that lie ahead in dismantling traditional views about marital roles and relationships, which, if left unaddressed, may impede progress toward a more equitable society. With growing concerns voiced around the findings, it remains vital for future discussions on gender equality to emphasize the advantages of a shared responsibility and mutual respect within partnerships, allowing both men and women to thrive in modern relationships.
