In recent months, Amar Subramanya, a veteran of the tech industry with over two decades of experience in artificial intelligence, has joined Apple to direct its AI strategy. He will report to Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, and his responsibilities include overseeing the Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation. Subramanya previously held high-level positions at Microsoft and Google, where he gained expertise in AI assistant technologies, deep learning, and large-scale machine learning systems. The appointment comes as Apple is under scrutiny for lagging behind competitors in the AI sector, particularly in the development and deployment of generative AI features. With his extensive background, Subramanya is expected to bring a fresh perspective and innovative solutions to Apple’s AI approach, further building on the company's existing infrastructure established by his predecessor, John Giannandrea. Giannandrea, who played a crucial role in developing Apple’s AI capabilities, will remain an advisor to ensure a smooth transition as Subramanya takes the lead.
