Nepal is set to conduct parliamentary elections on March 5, 2026, following a tumultuous political environment characterized by a youth-led uprising that led to the ousting of the previous government in September 2025. This election marks the first general election since the protests, which were fueled by widespread discontent over corruption and governance issues. More than 19 million eligible voters, including around 800,000 first-time voters, will participate in the elections to elect members to the House of Representatives, which comprises 275 seats. The registration of voters has increased significantly, with nearly 1 million new registrations since the last elections in November 2022. This surge is largely attributed to the heightened political engagement of youth who were instrumental in the uprising against the previous government amid ongoing frustrations with political instability in the country. The Election Commission has reported that among the registered voters, approximately 966,000 are men and 924,000 are women, while a small number are recognized under the 'others' category, which includes individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The upcoming elections will allow voters to directly elect 165 members to the House of Representatives, while the other 110 seats will be filled through a proportional representation system, ensuring a fair representation based on the parties' share of the votes. Just ahead of the elections, leaders from various political parties have called on citizens to turn out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote and to ensure the success of what they describe as a historic moment for Nepal's democracy. Security has also been heightened with more than 77,000 police officers and approximately 80,000 military personnel deployed nationwide, following incidents in which authorities arrested over 130 individuals on charges related to anti-election activities. Political leaders have emphasized the need for peace and harmony, urging voters to approach the elections as a crucial step towards the consolidation of democracy in Nepal amid a backdrop of ongoing political turmoil and frequent changes in government over the past two decades.
