Ireland is witnessing a significant investment in research and innovation as Research Ireland allocates €4.4 million to fund 46 fellowships through its Enterprise Fellowship programme. This initiative supports late-stage PhD students and postdoctoral researchers by providing them with entrepreneurial experiences that extend beyond traditional academic settings. The programme is designed to enhance collaborative projects, helping researchers develop skills and knowledge that bridge the gap between academia and the enterprise sector. Out of nearly 50 successful awardees, notable recipients include 11 from University College Dublin, five from Dublin City University, and five from Trinity College Dublin. This investment emphasizes a strong desire for collaboration between various sectors in Ireland. Both the 'placement stream' and 'partnership stream' will support a total of 31 and 15 projects, respectively, with substantial financial backing. These streams aim to link academics with enterprise partners and provide research while pursuing collaborative initiatives. The fellowship programme was initiated after calls were sent out early last year, with awardees notified by November. The placement stream received an investment of €3.1 million, while the partnership stream obtained an additional €1.3 million. Several successful projects include research on assessing the health of Irish peatlands, mechanisms leading to retinal regeneration, the impacts of sustainable aviation fuels, and using AI for personalized cancer treatment. Diarmuid O’Brien, the CEO of Research Ireland, highlighted that the high level of participation showcases a strong interest in inter-sector collaboration for meaningful research. This funding aims to grow the talent base and enhance the economy and society through the development of practical solutions for real-world challenges, reaffirming the strategy launched to boost Ireland's research and innovation ecosystem.
