Singapore is developing a new underground link connecting the future Terminal 5 (T5) to Terminal 2 (T2) of Changi Airport. This people-mover system, designed to transport passengers swiftly, will allow for a four-minute transit time between the two terminals. The Changi Airport Group (CAG) announced that the automated system, akin to the existing Skytrain, will have a frequency of operating every four to eight minutes once fully functional. Construction milestones include the completion of 1.7 km of the three tunnels between T5 and T2, which together extend a total of 2.5 km. The project emphasizes efficiency for transit passengers, enabling connections to flights within an hour from T5. An additional baggage tunnel is being constructed, with the capability to transfer up to 3,000 bags per hour, showcasing an improvement over the existing system that handles more than 2,700 bags an hour between Terminals 1, 2, and 3. This modernization reflects the airport's commitment to enhancing passenger experience and operational effectiveness. Significant construction challenges arose during the tunneling process, particularly due to the need to work beneath an active taxiway. Engineers employed a top-down construction method to minimize impact on surface operations, ensuring that the taxiways remained operational and the risks of surface sinking were mitigated. With the construction of T5 having officially commenced in May 2025, the strategic planning and execution of this expanding infrastructure signal Changi Airport's aim to maintain its reputation as a leading global aviation hub. As part of the integration with the wider transportation network, the completed system ensures that travelers can easily navigate through the busy airport environment.
