Japan is taking significant steps to enhance its defense capabilities by focusing on the domestic production of interceptor drones. The Tokyo-based company, Terra Drone, has announced plans to establish a system that could enable the production of tens of thousands of these drones annually. In March, Terra Drone made a full-scale entry into the defense drone market, expanding its operations beyond civilian-use drones. As part of this strategic move, the company acquired two Ukrainian firms specializing in the development of interceptor drones. Toru Tokushige, the head of Terra Drone, emphasized the urgent need for Japan to promote domestic production of defense drones to adapt to the evolving security landscape.
Tokushige pointed out that the current reliance on overseas manufacturing for both drones and their components poses risks to supply continuity during potential crises. He noted that the awareness of potential conflicts necessitates the establishment of a robust domestic production system. This includes utilizing facilities and locations that are less vulnerable to attacks, ensuring that Japan can maintain its defense capabilities even in challenging circumstances.
