On December 7, 2025, the United States marks the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, a pivotal moment in history that propelled the nation into World War II. This year is particularly significant as it is the first time in decades that no survivors of the attack will attend the annual remembrance ceremony. Currently, only 12 survivors remain, all of whom are centenarians, which highlights the passing of the last generation with direct experiences from the event. Kimberlee Heinrichs voices the sorrow felt by many, expressing heartbreak over her father, a survivor, being unable to attend due to illness. The remembrance ceremony has traditionally included solemn rituals honoring those lost during the attack on December 7, 1941. In a positive turn, several descendants of survivors have joined organizations dedicated to remembrance, indicating a commitment to keeping the history alive for future generations. As society reflects on the meaning of Pearl Harbor, the emphasis is now shifting towards how people will honor the memory of those who were there and the world that was forever altered. As fewer firsthand accounts are available, it becomes crucial to find alternative methods to commemorate the past and ensure that the lessons learned from such a significant event are not forgotten. In this context, survivors' memories continue to hold immense value as part of the collective consciousness of the nation.
