- Anthropic surpasses OpenAI in market share and app downloads, indicating the urgency for OpenAI's innovations.
- The launch of the new app aims to reinforce OpenAI’s position in a competitive AI landscape.
Story
In response to competition from Anthropic, OpenAI is developing a new desktop application that will integrate its AI chatbot, coding tools, and web browser features into a single platform. This strategic move is aimed at addressing the challenges posed by Anthropic, which has rapidly gained market traction, now appealing to over 300,000 enterprise customers. As of March 2026, Anthropic’s chatbot Claude has outperformed OpenAI's ChatGPT in download statistics, highlighting the urgency for OpenAI to innovate and retain its user base. OpenAI’s desktop app development will be led by Fidji Simo, along with company president Greg Brockman, and will maintain ChatGPT as a separate app. To enhance its capabilities in software development, OpenAI is also acquiring the start-up Astral, known for developing Python tools, to further bolster its coding assistant Codex. This acquisition aims to improve Codex's functionality across various stages of the software development lifecycle. With more than 2 million weekly active users already, Codex is a direct competitor to Anthropic’s Claude Code and its newly launched tool Cowork, designed to simplify code development for users. The competitive landscape of AI tools has dramatically shifted, with recent statistics showing that Anthropic has captured 73% of the new spending among companies venturing into AI technologies, in contrast to OpenAI's reduced share of 27%. This shift in market dynamics, combined with the public engagement over AI safety concerns following Anthropic’s conflict with the Department of Defense, has made the AI field increasingly contentious. As OpenAI embarks on this ambitious project to launch a 'superapp,' it is also reflecting on its broader strategy in the face of growing challenges. The effectiveness of this integration, in not only retaining existing customers but also attracting new ones, remains to be seen, especially in a market that is becoming rapidly competitive and complex. The overall goal for OpenAI is to reinforce its standing within the AI sector and counter the rising influence of competitors like Anthropic, as well as to continue innovating in an ever-evolving technological landscape.
