In Germany, five men have been detained by authorities for their involvement in a network that was illegally exporting goods to defense companies in Russia. The arrests took place in Lübeck and the nearby Lauenburg district, led by federal prosecutors following the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. The detained individuals are all German nationals; among them, two are also Russian citizens and one is a Ukrainian citizen. Authorities suspect these men of being members of a criminal organization, and they are being investigated for violating Germany's foreign trade and payments act. Investigations have revealed that from the time Russia launched its invasion, the group used businesses, including at least one bogus firm in Lübeck, to procure goods intended for Russian military industry. The suspects allegedly concealed their activities with fake companies and customer profiles within and outside of the European Union, attempting to bypass EU sanctions. Prosecutors suggest that state agencies in Russia may have facilitated this network, aiming to support defense capabilities during the ongoing conflict. Further inquiries indicated that this network arranged around 16,000 deliveries to Russia, valued at a minimum of 30 million euros ($35.5 million). The end customers included at least 24 separate defense companies in Russia. The exact types of goods delivered remain unspecified, but the operations illustrate the ongoing efforts by various groups to circumvent sanctions imposed due to the geopolitical situation. The German authorities have not only made these five arrests but have also indicated that others within the network have yet to be detained. As searches were conducted across various properties in the country, the investigative efforts signify a larger crackdown on unlawful trade practices that undermine international sanctions against Russia.
