Story

In Lithuania, a LOT Polish Airlines aircraft, an Embraer 170 registered as SP-LDK, slid off the runway at Vilnius airport on November 26, 2025. The incident occurred around 1:34 PM local time as the plane was taxiing toward the stand after landing on a flight from Warsaw. Luckily, all 63 passengers and four crew members on board were able to disembark safely without any reported injuries. They were subsequently transferred to the terminal where they collected their baggage and left the airport safely. Due to the incident, officials were prompted to close the runway temporarily until 5 PM. An investigation is being conducted by LOT Polish Airlines' technical services in cooperation with Vilnius airport operational services to assess the situation and understand the causes of the aircraft veering off the runway. This incident occurred amidst poor weather conditions, as the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service had previously warned travelers to postpone travel due to inclement weather, indicating that temperatures were expected to reach freezing. Images circulating on social media showed Vilnius airport covered in heavy snow, further contributing to the potential risks for air travel in the region. Flight LO772, scheduled to depart from Vilnius, was subsequently canceled following the incident. The airline has communicated that they will provide further information regarding subsequent flights to and from Vilnius as the investigation continues. The incident follows previous airport closures due to weather balloons that had been reported in October, causing disruptions and further complicating travel in the area. Lithuania's authorities have been dealing with various challenges related to aerial traffic management, particularly with the appearance of contraband activities that risk national security and passenger safety. As of now, all passengers have been managed efficiently, with no injuries reported, and the long-term implications of this incident will likely put greater scrutiny on air safety protocols and procedures at Vilnius airport as they prepare for future adverse weather conditions.
