Story

In April 2026, South Africa welcomed nearly 1 million international tourists, marking a significant milestone in the country’s tourism sector. The total number of international arrivals for that month reached 989,329, a substantial increase of 19.5% compared to the same time in the previous year. This impressive growth occurred even amid ongoing global aviation disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East, which have caused challenges in air travel and rising ticket prices worldwide. The data comes from the latest Statistics South Africa International Tourism Report, which emphasizes the resilience of the nation’s tourism despite these adverse circumstances. Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille acknowledged the sharp increase in visitor numbers and expressed optimism about the sector’s recovery. The total international arrivals for the first four months of 2026 stood at 3,899,358. This represents a year-on-year increase of 14.1%, translating to an additional 482,935 international arrivals compared to the same period in 2025. De Lille attributed this success to the steadfastness of South Africa’s tourism industry and pointed out growth from essential markets like Singapore and Brazil. Visitor arrivals from Singapore surged by 70.5%, reaching 938 in April, while Brazil experienced a 37.5% rise with 5,953 arrivals. These figures indicate that particular regions are not only maintaining their markets but also expanding in visitor numbers. The robust interest from these countries suggests the effectiveness of South Africa’s tourism promotion strategies, which have clearly resonated with international travelers. Looking forward, the tourism sector anticipates further growth due to new international air routes that are set to be launched in the coming months. Brazilian airline LATAM Airlines is scheduled to introduce three weekly direct flights between São Paulo and Cape Town in July 2026, citing increased demand as the reason for moving up the launch date. Meanwhile, Spanish airline Air Europa will inaugurate a direct route between Madrid and Johannesburg starting June 24, 2026. These developments are expected to bolster tourism even further, indicating that, despite the challenges worldwide, South Africa’s tourism industry is poised for a steady recovery.
