Story
Taiwan has taken significant steps toward promoting sustainable travel through a partnership with Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. On April 20, 2026, the Tourism Administration, which is part of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding in Taipei City. This collaboration underscores the government's commitment to eco-friendly tourism initiatives. The initiative will advance the recently launched ‘Sustainable Taiwan, Slow Travel’ project, which began in January 2025, and has already shown impressive outcomes. The ‘Sustainable Taiwan, Slow Travel’ project allows travelers to engage more deeply with local communities and environments, encouraging a slower pace of travel. As of now, more than 145,000 travelers have made bookings with 110 local hotels through this initiative, reflecting its strong reception among tourists. Additionally, the project has generated significant environmental benefits, estimating over 3,250 metric tons in yearly carbon reductions. The Tourism Administration emphasized that the project’s successful performance was pivotal in deciding to continue integrating resources with the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. Moreover, participation has expanded within the hospitality sector, with 137 businesses now collaborating under this sustainable framework. The Tourism Administration is also planning additional recommended tours to enhance the experience for visitors. Upcoming excursions include a visit to the National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung City set for May and a guided exploration of the Xitou Nature Education Area in Nantou County scheduled for July. In its efforts to further diversify travel options, the Taiwan Rail Corp has similarly enhanced its services, working alongside the Tourism Administration to launch sightseeing trains. This cooperative effort reflects a broader trend in the industry towards sustainable travel practices as both organizations aim to innovate and promote environmentally friendly tourism alternatives, making Taiwan a more attractive destination for eco-conscious travelers.
