The Bocek family, who traveled from Germany, fell ill on November 12, 2023, after exposure to a toxic gas likely emitted from a pesticide used in their hotel room, located in the Fatih district. Following their initial hospital visit, the condition of the family worsened, leading to a second hospital trip. The consequences of this health disaster were severe, resulting in the deaths of the children, Kadir Muhammet, aged 6, and Masal, aged 3, on November 13. Their mother, Cigdem, passed away the next day, with their father, Servet, dying four days later on November 17. The preliminary autopsy report pointed to the presence of phosphine gas, a metabolite of insecticides, on various surfaces within the hotel room, including towels and masks. An important detail revealed from the autopsy was that food poisoning was ruled out, dispelling initial speculations linking the deaths to street food consumed while exploring the city.
