Story

In January 2025, Matvei Rumiantsev, a 23-year-old Russian national, was convicted in London for assaulting a woman during an incident in her flat which was witnessed by Barron Trump, the youngest son of former President Donald Trump. The attack occurred on January 18, 2025, when Barron Trump was on a video call with the victim. During this call, Rumiantsev could be seen striking the victim while she cried. Trump alerted the City of London Police as he witnessed the horrific scene unfold. Rumiantsev's jealousy over the victim's friendship with Barron Trump was indicated as a motivating factor for the assault. He had learned of their friendship in October 2024, which led to feelings of jealousy and anger over the victim's interactions with the younger Trump. The case gained media attention due to the involvement of the Trump family and the serious nature of the crime. The court proceedings revealed that Rumiantsev had attacked the woman over a prolonged period, striking her multiple times before dragging her by her hair when she attempted to escape for help. During the trial, he was found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and perverting the course of justice, as he attempted to contact the victim from prison, asking her to withdraw the allegations made against him. Notably, he was found not guilty of rape and strangulation charges related to the same incident. The judge, Mr. Justice Bennathan, criticized Rumiantsev for being unrepentant, emphasizing his failure to take responsibility for his actions. During sentencing, he acknowledged the significant harm caused to the victim, detailing her fear during the attack, as she believed she might die. Rumiantsev's actions could also result in deportation from the UK due to his conviction. The unique connection to the Trump family through Barron Trump, who responsibly contacted the authorities after witnessing the attack, highlighted the incident's broader public interest.
