Former Olympian Mara Yamauchi has publicly criticized Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy for her stance on male participation in female sports categories. Speaking on GB News, Yamauchi emphasized the need for Nandy to advocate for women’s rights in sports, arguing that the integrity of female competitions is compromised when males are allowed to compete. She stated, “Biology does matter,” asserting that males should not participate in female categories to ensure fairness and safety for women and girls. Yamauchi expressed disappointment with Nandy's approach, which she described as deferring the decision to national governing bodies. She pointed out that, despite nearly three years of discussion, most sports in the UK still permit males to compete in female categories, with only a few exceptions. Yamauchi called for Nandy to take a more proactive role in urging these governing bodies to restore fairness in women’s sports. The former athlete highlighted the importance of having separate categories for sex-affected sports, advocating for single-sex categories to protect female athletes. She acknowledged that mixed-sex competitions could be beneficial for those who choose to participate in them, but insisted that women and girls deserve equitable opportunities at all levels of sport, from grassroots to elite. Yamauchi concluded by condemning instances of males deliberately underperforming in female categories, labeling it a “complete corruption” of the essence of sport. Her comments reflect a growing concern over the implications of gender inclusion policies in competitive athletics.
