Story

In 2025, Southampton airport in England experienced the highest cancellation rate of major UK airports, reaching three percent of scheduled flights. Analysis conducted by airline compensation company AirAdvisor, which utilized data from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), revealed that over 900,000 passengers travel through Southampton airport each year, making it a vital travel hub for the southern region of the UK. Despite various factors influencing flight cancellations such as weather, air traffic congestion, and technical aircraft issues, the airport was also noted for having the same cancellation rate in the previous year, 2024. The CAA specifies that a cancelled flight is defined as the non-operation of a previously planned flight, announced less than 24 hours before or after the scheduled departure time. Following Southampton, two Scottish airports, Aberdeen and Glasgow, recorded a cancellation rate of 1.6 percent. London City airport had a slightly lower rate at 1.5 percent, while Heathrow, the busiest airport in the UK, had a cancellation rate of 1.4 percent during the same period. Conversely, several airports managed to maintain significantly lower rates, with Bournemouth airport being the least affected, recording only 0.17 percent of flights cancelled. Other airports with low cancellation rates included Luton at 0.34 percent, Stansted at 0.41 percent, Belfast International at 0.49 percent, and Bristol at 0.51 percent.
