Story

In a surprising incident in New Zealand, on November 30, 2025, a baby seal unexpectedly entered the Sprig + Fern The Meadows craft beer bar located in Richmond, at the top of the South Island. The animal surprised patrons as it ambled through the doors, initially mistaken for a dog by the bar's co-owner Bella Evans. Upon further inspection, it became clear that the visitor was indeed a baby seal. The seal, after exploring, lodged itself under a dishwasher, prompting the bar staff to find ways to coax it out. Fortunately, the establishment is pet-friendly, which had made the presence of an animal less unusual in the venue. However, the baby seal's antics drew significant attention, leading to a flurry of actions to ensure its safety and return to a natural environment. The bar's co-owner, realizing the situation was beyond their control, brought in some salmon to lure the seal out from its hiding spot under the dishwasher. They quickly retrieved a dog crate from a customer’s house to assist in capturing the creature safely. Conservation rangers had already been monitoring the wandering seal, receiving numerous reports about its sightings in the Richmond area that same day. Once the rangers arrived, they successfully secured the baby seal and relocated it to a more suitable environment on Rabbit Island. This location was considered a safe retreat because it is devoid of dogs, minimizing any potential threats to the seal. In recent years, successful conservation efforts in New Zealand have led to a resurgence in seal and sea lion populations, increasing the likelihood of close encounters between these animals and humans as they wander into urban areas during what scientists refer to as the “silly season.” This phenomenon is characterized by young seals exploring unusual territories, typically following rivers and streams some distance away from their natural coastal habitats. Evans, reflecting on the surprising incident, noted that this was the first experience of having to evict a patron of such nature since she opened the pub with her partner. The baby seal, affectionately named Fern by the bar staff, captured the hearts of many, and Evans even joked about securing the
