India is pursuing a modernization program for its military aircraft, particularly focusing on the Sukhoi Su-30MKI jets, with substantial input from Russia. Amid strategic discussions to formalize the acquisition of the fifth-generation Su-57 stealth fighters from Moscow, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is looking to enhance its capabilities through significant upgrades. The current plan for the Super Sukhoi program, which aims to upgrade 84 of the 272 Su-30MKI aircraft, is pending approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). The IAF also intends to upgrade the remainder of its fleet of around 175 jets through alternate methods, ensuring a comprehensive enhancement of its aerial prowess. A high-level Russian delegation has visited a Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) facility where the Sukhoi aircraft are manufactured under license, signifying the importance of bilateral defense cooperation. This partnership is driven by India's desire to mitigate potential delays associated with domestic upgrades, which generally span seven years from the time approval is granted, suggesting an overall strategic intent to expedite modernization processes. Furthermore, there are advanced discussions regarding the local production of Su-57 aircraft in India, highlighting an effort to deepen industrial ties and technology transfer, with Russia offering full licensed production and unrestricted technology access, which is unprecedented in India’s defense procurement history. Currently, approximately 60% of India's military hardware is of Russian origin, showcasing a long-standing defense relationship that is set to evolve as New Delhi embraces more localized manufacturing capabilities and seeks to enhance its self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
