Story
In October 2022, the wreck of the luxury steamer, Lac La Belle, was found in Lake Michigan, marking the culmination of a nearly 60-year search. Search efforts led by Illinois shipwreck hunter Paul Ehorn utilized side-scan sonar technology to locate the wreck approximately 20 miles offshore between Racine and Kenosha, Wisconsin, making the discovery after just two hours on the lake. The ship had originally set sail from Milwaukee to Grand Haven, Michigan, on the night of October 13, 1872, with 53 passengers and crew members aboard along with a cargo of barley, pork, flour, and whiskey. Tragically, a fierce gale forced the vessel off course, ultimately leading to its sinking at around 5 a.m. after the captain ordered the lifeboats lowered. The Lac La Belle sank stern first due to the storm's intensity. Built in 1864, the steamer had previously experienced a collision in the St. Clair River in 1866, resulting in its own wreck at that time. Shipwreck hunters have recently intensified their efforts to locate wrecks, largely due to concerns surrounding the destruction of historical sites pertaining to invasive species such as quagga mussels that threaten preservation. This discovery adds to Ehorn's history of locating shipwrecks; the Lac La Belle represents the 15th shipwreck he has identified throughout his career, signaling both a personal achievement and a greater effort to protect these maritime artifacts. Ehorn reflects on the nature of shipwreck hunting as a challenging puzzle, one that increasingly becomes more difficult as the more accessible wrecks are identified. With the successful search for Lac La Belle, attention will shift to future explorations and the inevitable challenges presented by the deep waters of the Great Lakes.
