In Japan, Toyota has announced the introduction of a new flagship coupe called the GR GT, aimed at showcasing its engineering prowess. This model, part of the Gazoo Racing sporty sub-brand, features a V8 hybrid engine and is set to hit the market toward the end of 2026. The GR GT emphasizes aerodynamics over conventional styling, as seen in the design that somewhat resembles the Camry. Constructed using a highly rigid aluminum frame for the first time, the car includes carbon fiber elements to reduce weight, prioritizing a lower center of gravity for enhanced performance. The GR GT is constructed with thorough attention to weight distribution and balance, reflected in its unique transaxle layout where the transmission is placed behind the cockpit. It will be equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission, incorporating a wet clutch. Although designed for performance, it weighs approximately 3,858 lbs (1,750 kg), highlighting Toyota's commitment to creating a potent and balanced sports vehicle. The hybrid system will not be part of the upcoming GR GT3 model used in racing, where it has to comply with GT3 regulations that necessitate a departure from road car technologies. The GR GT3 is expected to replace the aging Lexus RC F GT3, thus continuing Toyota's legacy in motorsport.
