For instance, Houghton was expected to see temperatures reaching the low 80s, with thunderstorms on Saturday, contrasting with cooler temperatures in the upper 50s on Sunday. Southeast Michigan anticipated scattered storms on Sunday evening, which could bring over an inch of rain in localized areas, raising concerns about potential flooding. In light of the celebrations typical of the holiday weekend, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued warnings regarding fire risks associated with drought conditions. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, certain areas of Michigan were reported to be dealing with abnormally dry to severe drought conditions. These dry conditions heightened the risk of uncontrolled fires when people engage in outdoor activities such as camping or using fireworks. Jeff Corser, a fire management specialist from the DNR, emphasized the importance of safe campfire practices and cautioned against open burning. The DNR highlighted prior incidents where campfires during dry conditions had gotten out of control, alerting residents to be cautious. Corser recommended keeping campfires within proper rings, thoroughly extinguishing them, and avoiding fireworks in delicate environments, particularly on dry grass or pine needles that are easily ignited. With Michigan's current drought conditions being exacerbated by a lack of snowpack and spring rain, the risks associated with outdoor fire use were significantly increased. This holiday weekend is traditionally associated with festive outdoor gatherings, yet safety must be prioritized due to the environmental conditions. While families enjoy various recreational activities, the DNR's guidelines seek to ensure that celebrations do not turn hazardous.
