On June 17, 2025, a targeted airstrike in central Gaza executed by the Israel Defense Forces led to the death of Ibrahim Abu Shumala, who served as the director of finance for the military wing of Hamas. His death represents a strategic blow to Hamas, as he was closely associated with Marwan Issa, the group's deputy commander, who was killed earlier in March 2024.
