Story

In a tragic incident off the coast of Hawaii, Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz, a 47-year-old sailor from Florida, lost his life on Saturday while attempting to rescue two children caught in high surf at Waiapua'a Bay. Diaz was stationed at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Barking Sands and is remembered for his bravery and dedication to service. After jumping into the tumultuous waters to assist the children, whom he successfully got to safety, Diaz faced difficulties himself and was eventually pulled from the water by local emergency personnel. Emergency responders from the Ocean Safety Bureau and the Barking Sands Fire and Emergency Services Department initiated lifesaving efforts on Diaz before he was transported to Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The Kaua'i Police Department has indicated that an autopsy will take place to determine the exact cause of death, although preliminary reports suggest that no foul play is expected. Capt. Robert Prince, commanding officer of the Pacific Missile Range Facility, expressed deep sorrow over Diaz's passing and extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and fellow service members. He praised the immediate responders for their efforts and emphasized the importance of supporting Diaz’s family during this difficult period. The community and military family are in mourning, reflecting on Diaz's heroic actions that have left a lasting impact. Such bravery serves as a reminder of the risks service members are willing to take to protect others, even at great personal peril. The tragedy has highlights both the dangers posed by high surf in Hawaii and the selflessness inherent in those who serve in naval roles.
