In Cork, Ireland, US telecoms company Motorola Solutions has officially opened a new global research and development centre. This facility, situated in Navigation Square, focuses primarily on software design for its public safety land mobile radio (LMR) portfolio, essential for two-way communication systems used by public safety organizations such as police and ambulance services. The centre employs nearly 200 individuals engaged in various roles including software engineering, development, testing, quality assurance, and management. The announcement of this R&D centre came in 2024, marking a significant expansion of Motorola's existing presence in Ireland, especially after acquiring Tetra Ireland, which operates the National Digital Radio Service in the country. This investment was made possible with the support of IDA Ireland, evidencing the country's stable business environment and attractive tech landscape. IDA CEO, Michael Lohan, and Taoiseach Micheál Martin both emphasized the positive implications of the new centre for Ireland’s reputation in the technology sector. In addition to its main operations, Motorola Solutions supports educational programs in Cork, such as the Tech For Good initiative which provides schools with 3D printers and resources to promote STEM education. Consequently, the investment demonstrates Motorola's commitment to addressing technological challenges while strengthening local capabilities in critical communications technology.
