In Ireland, the University of Galway and the medical device company Medtronic have recently initiated a Medical Device Prototype Hub aimed at fostering innovation within the medical technology sector. This launch is part of a five-year €5 million partnership that emphasizes collaborative efforts among government entities, industry leaders, and academia. The hub is designed to support the medtech ecosystem, STEM engagement, and research specifically tailored towards developing medical device prototypes. Through this initiative, the university hopes to create an environment conducive to groundbreaking research and development. Led by Professor David Burn, the president of the university, the hub aims to facilitate early-stage medical device innovation by providing resources for virtual and physical prototyping. This effort aligns with broader goals to promote regional growth in life sciences and advance the capabilities within the medical technology sector in Ireland. The new facility is part of the university's Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation, which was established in 2024. The hub will leverage expertise from dedicated staff aimed at overseeing all aspects of device concept creation, development, and production. Aoife Duffy, head of the Technology Services Directorate, emphasized the importance of strategic investment in core research facilities that enable excellence at the university and drive innovation within the region. Lastly, keynote speakers from both Medtronic and the University of Galway expressed excitement over this partnership. Ronan Rogers, senior R&D director at Medtronic, highlighted the shared commitment to advancing research and accelerating innovation for the next generation of medical technologies.
