Story

In December 2024, Gisèle Pelicot, a French woman, underwent a public trial that addressed her harrowing experience of sexual violence inflicted by her ex-husband Dominique Pelicot and 50 other men. This case, which has been termed as one of France's most shocking mass rape incidents, saw Gisèle waiving her anonymity, which led to a significant movement for sexual violence survivors. The trial lasted for three months in Avignon and involved audiences of women who gathered outside the courthouse to support her. Many women from around the globe sent her letters of encouragement, which she often read at the end of each challenging day in court. Although the trial ended with the convictions of 51 men, she expressed doubt about the possibility of identifying and apprehending approximately 20 other alleged attackers. Throughout her ordeal, she maintained a powerful stance on the issue, emphasizing the importance that shame should belong to the abusers rather than the victims. Her memoir, written with journalist Judith Perrignon, titled 'Hymn to Life: Shame Has to Change Sides,' encapsulates her experiences and message of hope for other survivors. The memoir was launched at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and received readings from prominent actresses. Notably, the Queen of the United Kingdom, Camilla, met with Gisèle Pelicot and praised her courage and dignity. In their conversation, Ms. Pelicot reflected on the emotional and psychological toll of her experience, describing her husband’s actions as a 'dark side' that shattered her family's life. Despite this trauma, she expressed her determination to find strength amidst adversity, leaving a message of resilience for other survivors to draw hope from their own challenging experiences.
