Saudi Arabia has unveiled a new combat ship, named His Majesty King Saud, as it continues to strengthen its defense capabilities. The vessel, which was officially launched in Wisconsin, is part of the kingdom's ongoing efforts to modernize its naval forces. Construction began in 2021 as part of the Tuwaiq project in collaboration with the United States, aimed at enhancing the Royal Saudi Naval Forces' readiness to protect the kingdom's strategic interests, particularly in vital maritime routes. The combat ship is based on the Littoral Combat Ship design and features advanced capabilities to engage various threats, including aerial, surface, and subsurface targets. According to the chief of staff of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces, this sophisticated vessel will significantly enhance their operational effectiveness both in near-shore and open-ocean environments. The construction of these ships reflects Saudi Arabia’s status as one of the world’s top arms buyers and its reliance on U.S. defense technologies to modernize military capabilities. Contracts to develop the Multi-Mission Surface Combatants (MMSC) were awarded to Lockheed Martin in 2018, with further developments proceeding through the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. The MMSC is designed to operate efficiently with a combination of anti-air and anti-surface warfare capabilities, which is essential for safeguarding maritime routes crucial to the Saudi economy. The unveiling and commissioning of this ship mark a significant milestone in U.S.-Saudi relations, underscoring the strengthened bilateral ties during the Trump administration. The relationship was solidified with multiple defense agreements and arms procurement deals, further reinforcing the U.S. commitment to Saudi defense needs.
