Story

On February 13, 2026, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its approval over the renewed agreement intended to eliminate double taxation between Taiwan and Singapore, indicating a positive step towards enhancing bilateral relations. This agreement was initially signed on December 31, 2025, by Tung Chen-yuan, head of the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore, and Singapore Trade Office Taipei representative Yip Wei Kiat. It aims to prevent tax evasion and avoidance and is set to become effective from January 1, 2027. The renewed pact is viewed as aligning well with the changing economic landscape, optimizing tax regulations, and promoting increased bilateral investments. The Ministry of Finance in Taiwan highlighted that this agreement is particularly significant because of the robust economic ties between the two regions. According to recent data, Taiwan ranked as Singapore’s largest trading partner in 2025, with total bilateral trade exceeding US$134.4 billion, demonstrating the complementary nature of both economies. The continuous cooperation between Taiwan and Singapore flourished since they first signed an agreement back in 1981. The relationship has encompassed various sectors, including culture, education, economy, tourism, and trade, aiming to enhance mutual benefits for the citizens of both countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that this renewed agreement symbolizes a new milestone in bilateral relations, ultimately working towards mutual prosperity. As part of Taiwan's government strategy known as the New Southbound Policy, these efforts are designed to deepen ties with not only Singapore but also with ten ASEAN member states, six South Asian countries, Australia, and New Zealand. Following through with this agreement and fostering positive relationships is crucial not just for economic growth but also for broader diplomatic relations in the region.
