Story
In response to U.S. sanctions imposed on Lukoil in October 2022, the Russian oil giant has initiated the process of divesting its overseas holdings, valued at approximately $22 billion. The sanctions prompted Lukoil to seek buyers for its international assets, which have become a point of interest for various energy companies. Some reports indicate that Bernd Bergmair, the former owner of Pornhub, is also exploring this opportunity. While he has not confirmed his plans, he expressed interest through a legal representative, stating that ownership of Lukoil International GmbH would be a significant investment. Following the imposition of sanctions in October 2022, Lukoil accepted an initial offer from Gunvor Group, an energy trader, to acquire its foreign subsidiary. However, this deal fell apart when the U.S. Treasury accused Gunvor of having connections to the Kremlin, adding further complexity to Lukoil's divestment efforts. The U.S. Treasury has since granted companies interested in acquiring Lukoil's assets the clearance to start negotiations until December 13, 2025, emphasizing the requirement of Treasury approval for these transactions due to ongoing sanctions. Multiple buyers have shown interest in acquiring Lukoil's assets, including well-known names such as Exxon Mobil and Chevron. Nevertheless, Lukoil reportedly prefers to sell its holdings as a single package. This strategy could complicate the negotiations as many prospective buyers are interested only in specific assets rather than the entire group. Lukoil has remained in discussions with several potential buyers while the deadline for negotiations approaches, highlighting the urgency of finalizing arrangements before the clearance expires. The Kremlin has condemned these sanctions as illegitimate and politically motivated, claiming that they disrupt international trade. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has remarked on the situation of Lukoil, calling the restrictions imposed by the U.S. “unacceptable” and indicating that they will ultimately be detrimental to international commerce. As the negotiations progress and the deadline nears, the potential acquisitions will be closely scrutinized in light of the geopolitical context and the implications for energy markets.
