Story

Indonesia is preparing to deploy up to 8,000 soldiers to Gaza, marking a significant step as the first nation to do so within the framework of a ceasefire agreement that the United States brokered late last year. General Maruli Simanjuntak, the army chief of staff, confirmed that training has already commenced, with soldiers focusing on medical and engineering roles. This move coincides with Indonesia's recent decision to join President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, which aims to stabilize Gaza and oversee the formation of a technocratic Palestinian government. The situation has been contentious within Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim country where public sentiment has largely been critical of the US's involvement in Israel's actions concerning Gaza. President Prabowo Subianto, in advocating for Indonesia's participation, defends the necessity of intervention as vital for pursuing a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, his actions have faced backlash from Islamic groups in the country who oppose closer ties with the US amidst ongoing hostilities. Reports indicate that a specific site in southern Gaza, located between Rafah and Khan Younis, has been allocated for the Indonesian military to establish their base. Other Muslim-majority nations including Turkey and Pakistan are also contemplating troop deployments to Gaza, but they have clarified their roles would be limited to peacekeeping, distinctly avoiding engagement in the disarmament efforts of Hamas. As delays continue in achieving a lasting peace between Israel and Palestine, tensions remain high. Hamas's refusal to relinquish its arms while Israeli forces maintain occupation poses substantial challenges for the proposed international stabilization force. The unaddressed grievances from both sides further complicate the efforts of the international community which aims to lay down the groundwork for peace in the region.
