Indonesia is set to advance its geothermal energy initiatives through a new partnership between SLB Limited and Star Energy Geothermal. Recently, the two companies signed several agreements aimed at enhancing geothermal development projects within Indonesia, with potential extensions to other regions. This partnership is significant as it focuses on undertaking detailed planning and design for the Sekincau geothermal project, envisioned to unlock new geothermal opportunities both locally and internationally. The collaboration symbolizes a strategic move for SLB to leverage its robust subsurface expertise alongside Star Energy’s established operational capabilities. Hendra Tan, the President Director of PT Barito Renewables Energy Tbk and Group CEO of Star Energy Geothermal, emphasized the initiative's importance for Indonesia’s role on the global geothermal energy stage. The integration of SLB’s advanced technology and global execution strengths with Star Energy's regional operational experience is expected to position geothermal energy as a pivotal contributor to Indonesia's energy transition. By harnessing geothermal resources effectively, this partnership aims to facilitate emissions reductions and bolster energy resilience in the region. The details of the agreements reflect a new phase of collaboration, with a concentrated effort on project-level planning and execution for the Sekincau Project. SLB intends to combine its subsurface expertise with comprehensive integrated planning to enhance overall geothermal development efforts. Nurzhan Ongaltayev, the managing director of SLB in Indonesia, remarked on the critical role of advanced technology and operational performance in scaling geothermal projects. The agreements not only demonstrate SLB's commitment to driving geothermal initiatives but also illustrate a belief in the potential of geothermal energy to achieve sustainable value globally. In addition to this new venture, SLB has secured a substantial five-year contract worth $1.5 billion with Kuwait Oil Company regarding the Mutriba field. This contract covers various aspects of field design, development, and production management, utilizing SLB’s expertise in handling complex and challenging high-pressure, high-temperature reservoirs. While the partnership with Star Energy Geothermal marks SLB's commitment to green initiatives, the contract in Kuwait highlights its capabilities in traditional oil and gas operations, showcasing a balanced approach in its strategic expansion efforts across different energy domains.
