In a significant move for international rail travel, Italy’s state-owned railway, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS Group), announced plans for a new high-speed train service connecting Paris and London by the year 2029. This initiative, revealed in December 2025, stems from a partnership with the US private investment firm Certares, aimed at creating a competitive alternative to the long-standing Eurostar service operated by Virgin. The project will involve a considerable investment of €1 billion, focusing on expanding Trenitalia France services and enhancing international connections through the Channel Tunnel. The FS Group intends to bolster its fleet with at least 19 new trains, as well as establish a new maintenance facility near Paris. This facility is expected to accommodate up to 28 daily trips on the existing Paris to Lyon line. Moreover, an additional service will facilitate trains traveling from Paris to London, positioning FS Group to operate directly from France, which could streamline the overnight storage of trains. With these developments, the FS Group aims to make rail travel an environmentally friendly, reliable, and cost-effective alternative to air transport. Certares' backing, which includes a contribution of approximately €300 million, is set to support this expansion, given that the FS Group’s international sector currently generates about €3 billion in revenue and employs around 12,000 individuals. Trenitalia France plans to collaborate with companies from Certares’ portfolio to encourage business customers to transition to high-speed rail travel. This partnership is expected to set new standards for sustainable transport in Europe. The establishment of this route comes as Virgin aimed to challenge Eurostar’s long-held monopoly on the Paris-London corridor. In recent months, the UK rail regulator provided Virgin with the green light to operate from an east London depot, with services anticipated to commence by 2030. Thus, the FS Group's initiative represents a critical competitive challenge as it gears up for earlier operations in the lucrative rail corridor that links two of Europe’s major capitals. The potential services can contribute significantly to the evolving landscape of European transportation and its shift towards greener alternatives.
