On March 13, 2026, in Taipei City, Taiwan, Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu hosted a tea reception to welcome electrical engineering graduate students from prominent U.K. universities. This event marked a significant occasion as it was the first group of British students visiting Taiwan under the Taiwan-U.K. Semiconductor Joint Skills Project. The initiative, which began with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in September 2025, is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the semiconductor industry by facilitating exchanges between students and industry representatives from both Taiwan and the U.K. During the reception, Wu expressed his enthusiasm for the British students’ arrival, emphasizing the importance of such educational exchanges in fostering closer ties between Taiwan and the U.K. He noted that both nations share a vision of cultivating talent in key industries, particularly semiconductor technology. The participation of over 60 officials and leaders from various sectors, including the Ministry of Economic Affairs and National Taiwan University, highlighted the collaborative spirit and significance of the event. British Office Representative Ruth Bradley-Jones remarked on the substantive nature of the cooperation, stating that the project goes beyond mere symbolism. She encouraged the students to fully embrace the opportunity to build enduring relationships between the semiconductor sectors of Taiwan and the U.K. Furthermore, Terry Tsao, president of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International Taiwan, pointed out that the project capitalized on the unique strengths of both countries; the U.K.’s expertise in research and design complemented Taiwan’s manufacturing capabilities.
