Story

In Oslo, Norway, Mona Juul resigned from her position as ambassador after facing increasing scrutiny regarding her contacts with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Juul, who had been involved in Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts during the 1990s and most recently served in Jordan, was suspended by the Norwegian Foreign Ministry just days before her resignation was announced. Reports revealed that Epstein included Juul's children in his will, leaving them a substantial amount of $10 million, which further intensified public scrutiny of her connections. Espen Barth Eide, the Norwegian Foreign Minister, stated that Juul's resignation was correct and necessary as her contact with Epstein indicated a significant lapse in judgment that made it difficult to maintain the trust expected of her role. Juul admitted to being imprecise about her previous characterization of the contact as minimal and pointed to the origin being linked to her husband's relationship with Epstein. The ministry began an investigation into Juul’s knowledge of and contact with Epstein, a process that is ongoing. Additionally, the ministry is reviewing its funding of and connections with the International Peace Institute, a New York-based think tank led by Terje Rød-Larsen, Juul's husband, during the timeframe of Epstein's involvement. In light of the new revelations, other prominent Norwegian figures associated with Epstein have also come under scrutiny. Crown Princess Mette-Marit recently issued a public apology in the wake of documents detailing her connections to Epstein, while authorities opened a corruption investigation into former Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland due to his ties with Epstein. This situation reflects a significant challenge for Norwegian diplomacy and the integrity of its officials in international relations, particularly concerning peace efforts in the Middle East, where both Juul and Rød-Larsen played critical roles in facilitating the Oslo Accords.
