Poland and Germany are currently in a dispute over the allocation of 6.6 billion euros ($7.7 billion) in European Peace Facility funding that has recently been unblocked. Germany, as the largest contributor to the fund, advocates for the entire amount to be directed to Ukraine to bolster its defense capabilities. In contrast, Poland is insisting that a portion of these funds be used to reimburse EU member states for military equipment they have already supplied to Ukraine. Poland's Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk has publicly stated that the funds are crucial for Poland's military needs, arguing that less money for Ukraine means less for Poland's own defense. The ongoing debate highlights the friction between EU member states regarding aid allocation and the complexities of international support for Ukraine. The European Peace Facility is designed to finance defense initiatives and has been used to reimburse countries for weapons transferred to Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. However, the current proposal from the EU suggests that only 10% of the unblocked funds would be allocated for reimbursements, with the remaining 90% dedicated to training Ukrainian forces and procuring new equipment.
